Fun With Polls: Milestones

Who will hit the big one first? As you may or may not have noticed to your left or right, we're helping three very awesome veterans count down to three very awesome numbers.

Ken Griffey Jr., Manny Ramirez and Chipper Jones are all just 2 longballs away from career homers 600, 500 and 400, respectively.

So, we want to know who you think will hit the big one first?

Fun With Polls: The Rocket's Future

Roger Clemens has had a pretty awesome offseason thus far, so he hasn't had a lot of time to consider his options for the 2008 season. Since we're nice gals, we thought we'd lay it all out for him.

There's the standard return to baseball, working out for teams, all that jazz. Then there's the "I think I'll wait until after the All-Star break to see which team is headed to the postseason" routine. Also, he could retire. Your thoughts? Feel free to use the write-in option in the comments section.

St. Peter Speaks to Fans

I am so smart. S-M-R-T...No, that's not Tom Arnold, it's Minnesota Twins President, Dave St. Peter! Apparently, Dave felt he had a bit of explaining to do.

Club officials released a mass email this weekend to their fans explaining the botched Johan Santana trade. Seriously.

A snippet:
"Trading a pitcher of Johan Santana's stature and character was a very difficult decision for the Twins organization."
Feel free to read the letter in its entirety over at Siberian Baseball... which brings us to this poll.

Fun With Polls: NL Batting Title

Last week, we wondered who you thought would become the American League Batting Champion.

45% of you voted in Ichiro Suzuki's favor while 34% claim Magglio Ordonez has what it takes to remain the best hitter in the league.

Jorge Posada stole 14% of your hearts and Chone Figgins tallied 5% while Placido Polanco and his strange head got 0 votes. That's a big fat Zero for Polanco.

So, we'll see in a few days who was right, who was wrong and who scores the AL Batting Title.

Onto the National League, where my favorite sweet swingin' switch-hitter, Chipper Jones leads the way with a .341 batting average. There are six whole games left in the Atlanta Braves' season for Chipper to dominate, which I hope he does. I don't see how he won't win this, considering how badass he is and everything.

But Mr. Jones has some competition, and his name is Mr. Holliday. Matt is hitting .337 on the year with six games left in the Colorado Rockies' season. After smoking 11 homers in 12 games leading into the weekend, he went 0-for-5 Friday night and was sidelined with a left oblique strain -- something that could kill his chances for the title if he can't bounce back in time.

Sadly, this isn't a beauty pageant. Chase Utley, who is a few degrees hotter than Death Valley, is batting .335 with six games remaining in the Philadelphia Phillies' season. Utley had a short hiatus due to a pesky broken right hand in late July -- a break that didn't stop the lefty from going 2-for-4 in the game which it occurred. Tough. As. Nails.

With six games left in both of their seasons, Hanley Ramirez (.333) and Edgar Renteria (.332) round out the poll much like Polanco and Figgins did the AL inquiry. They're both awesome, but may or may not be awesome enough to figure in the race.

Fun With Polls: AL Batting Title

With a tight race for the American League Batting Title in the works, we thought it would be interesting to see who our readers think will pull ahead in the end.

As it stands today, Ichiro Suzuki leads the AL hitters with a .354 batting average with 11 games left in the Seattle Mariners' regular season.

Fun With Polls: Home Run Milestones

In our most recent poll, we asked you to vote on who you thought - between Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez - would reach their home run milestone faster.

So 85% of you voted in favor of A-Rod, which is probably a safe bet. Barry has been in a deep homer drought since July 3rd, and it seems there is no end in sight. Of course, it doesn't help that he hasn't played in 3 straight games and hardly ever plays during the day...

Fun With Polls: Home Run Milestones

In our most recent poll, we wanted the worst prime time baseball broadcaster to be chosen by you.

Tim McCarver, we hereby dub you the Crappiest Announcer in the world. In an overwhelming voter turnout, 25% of you say that Timmy's 16 years of broadcasting is enough to kill a bird in flight.

Don't think it wasn't a close one, though. Chris Berman was right behind him at 24% with his tired Back, Back, Back schtick. The all-knowing Joe Morgan with his amazing take on the game came in third with 22% of the tallies. Surprisingly, you all are extremely tolerant of Joe Buck and all that rama-langa-ding-dong crap, giving him only 15% of the hatred.

Fun With Polls: Crappy Announcers

Ichiro - the MVPIn our most recent poll, we asked you to predict the winner of this year's Midsummer Classic. Good work! Over half of you (55%) said the American League would pull off the win to gain home field advantage for the World Series.

The other 45% of you... well, there's always the next decade. We mean that in the most encouraging way possible, you know. Seriously, extra baseball was looming for a minute there. You can't get much closer than being down a run with the bags full.

So, we had a great time liveblogging the All-Star festivities over at Deadspin. It was a success. That is to say, nothing was broken and the Gawker hamster, Nibbles came off the DL after just a few innings. As we stated early in the game, Tim McCarver and Joe Buck make it easier to be funny.

Which brings us to our next poll! Who, of the 5 choices given, is the worst (current) prime time baseball announcer? This may be the toughest poll yet. Seriously. They're all terrible in their own special way.

Feel free to go on the record in the comments section!

Fun With Polls: Midsummer Classic

In our most recent poll, we asked who you thought would win the Home Run Derby. Turns out, 6% of you were right on the money. Good job!

The larger 32% of the voters (and I) bet on the Canadian Crusher - hoping he'd hit more than 5 bombs all night - to win it all. The event turned out somewhat anti-climactic for Justin Morneau and us as well.

7.08.2007

Fun With Polls: Home Run Derby

In our most recent poll, we asked your opinion on MLB's method of using the All-Star game winner to choose home field advantage for the World series...

59% of you said that the method sucks.

26% say it's fair.

The other 15% have no opinion on the matter.

Personally, I find it completely misrepresenting of MLB's standard objectivity. If they cared, they'd give it to whoever has the best record. In the case of a tie, the advantage could go to the head-to-head winner during Interleague play or simply the team with the best Interleague record, if the two hadn't faced each other that season. But for some strange reason, I don't make those decisions.

In light of All-Star festivities beginning this week, our next poll is on the Home Run Derby, which will take place Monday night. Which one of these monsters is your favorite to win it all?

Feel free to go on the record in the comments!

7.03.2007

Fun With Polls: Home Field Advantage

In our most recent poll, we asked your thoughts on the people who rush the field. Are they hammered, dumb or just plain crazy? Most importantly, is this distraction acceptable?

60% of you say it's not cool to hop the fences while 24% of the easily entertained say it is. The other 17% don't really care either way.

We just love hearing your opinion, so we're gonna throw another poll your way.

Some folks think the All-Star game is nothing but a show for the fans. All the best players from each league, getting together to entertain us. However, the winning league gets home field advantage during the World Series.

Fun With Polls: Unstable Fans

Old people and baseballIn our most recent poll: Old People and Baseball, we asked our lovely readers their thoughts on players - pitchers in particular - who play into their mid-to-late-40s.

In every poll so far, we've learned more and more about you. It turns out, you're pretty forgiving, fairly understanding and just overall nice people who give big league players the benefit of the doubt. Good for you guys!

44% of you led the vote by saying if guys like the Rocket, the Big Unit, El Duque, the Blowhard and Boomer can stay healthy, more power to them.

27% said it's great these players can pitch into their 40s.

16% feel like these geezers are taking starts away from young, promising pitchers who are stuck in the minor leagues.

Finally, 13% think they should take up things like golfing or fishing... you know, things normal retired old people do.

This brings us to our next exciting poll, a look at unstable fans. There have been a few instances of fans running onto the field this season, just like every other. There's always some guy in the stands, maybe taking a bet from his buddy or downing one too many $8 brews which leads to a hankering for rushing the field.

Many times these wild and crazy fans will be fined, jailed, or both with the possibility of being banned from the ball field. Is shaking Barry Bonds hand or high-fiving Hideki Matsui really worth that risk?

Some see it as a distraction, others see it as hilarity. So, is it cool for fans to rush the field?

Fun With Polls: Old People and Baseball

Oh, my aching back. And limbs. As previously mentioned, there are seven gentlemen over the age of 40 starting games today. Yep, seven - obviously a record. And here they are with their age in parenthesis:

  • Roger Clemens (44)
  • Jamie Moyer (44)
  • Kenny Rogers (42)
  • Greg Maddux (41)
  • Tom Glavine (41)
  • Woody Williams (40)
  • John Smoltz (40)

Does this impress or alarm you? Players hurling into their greys used to be a novelty... not anymore. These guys are pitching well into their 40's, regardless of the state of their brittle bones.

It seems the Arizona Diamondbacks didn't get the memo, however. Randy Johnson (43) doesn't pitch until tomorrow.

Boomer Wells (44) and El Duque (41) have the day off, as well... since there's only room on the bump for one old fart at a time.

Fun With Polls: Padres and Cubs Trade

In our most recent poll, we pondered on the St. Louis Cardinals' many issues. We asked what you fine readers thought and you've spoken.

30% said the Cards are slumping and struggling due to their laundry list of injuries and star players' trips to the DL. The obvious choice.

22% of you claim there's no plausible explanation besides the fact that they can't hit or pitch: they just plain suck at baseball.

19% said Tony La Russa is drunk.

16% of you blame the Brewers being in the same division.

The last 13% say there's nothing to worry about and that they'll catch their footing after the All-Star Break.

So, there you have it.

That brings us to our next burning question: Was this morning's Cubs and Padres trade a good move?

The San Diego Padres acquired controversial catcher Michael Barrett in a trade with the Chicago Cubs for backstop Rob Bowen, plus a little cash and a minor leaguer.

6.18.2007

Fun With Polls: The Cardinals

In our last exciting poll, we wondered what your take was on controversial slugger, Barry Bonds and his quest for The Record.

Turns out, 25% of you believe that Bonds' passing of Hank Aaron will be a blemish on the game of baseball.

22% said records were simply made to be broken.

21% of you don't give a crap.

18% think Bonds' achievements are a product of steroid use, therefore invalid.

The other 15% of you say Bonds has worked hard for what he has accomplished.

This brings us to our next poll: What The Hell Is Wrong With The Cardinals?

The reigning World Series Champs are sitting at a dismal 30-36, third in the NL Central behind the Milwaukee Brewers and yes, even the Chicago Cubs. So, what's the deal?

6.16.2007

Fun With Polls: Barry Bonds

In our last poll, we asked whether you thought Jason Giambi would spill the beans to the commissioner's office after being given the ultimatum of talking or being suspended.

36% of you said that Giambi had enough respect for his fellow teammates to not rat anyone out who had used performance enhancing drugs in the past.

14% of voters said they thought he would narc for sure.

The other 14% of you said the Giambino is a mystery to you.

We'll see what happens this Tuesday when he meets with Bud Selig to discuss the outcome of the two weeks he was given to "cooperate" with George Mitchell's steroids investigation.

Onto the next burning question, with even more possible answers!

You either love him or hate him. Either way, Barry Bonds is just 8 bombs away from passing the legendary Hall of Famer Henry Aaron on the all-time home runs list.

What is your take on Bonds' inevitable breaking of The Record?

6.15.2007

Fun With Polls: Jason Giambi

In our last poll, we asked whether you thought Ozzie Guillen was responsible for the Chicago White Sox recent woes. According to our results, it appears our fine readers believe that the somewhat outspoken Venezuelan skipper is not to blame.

Exactly 58% of you said that the Pale Hose are in a slump simply because they suck at baseball.

Now that that's settled, onto our next question. What is going to happen between now and Tuesday with Jason Giambi?

Commissioner Bud Selig has turned on the heat for the apologetic Yankees slugger, reportedly telling him he has until Tuesday to cooperate... or else.

6.13.2007

Fun With Polls: Ozzie Guillen

The 27-34 Chicago White Sox are sitting at a dismal fourth place in the AL Central, having lost fourteen of their last seventeen games. The Skipper is not happy.

"They are playing for the wrong general manager and the wrong manager if they are set on losing every day," Guillen said after last night's 7-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

We want to know what you think.

Can the Pale Hose blame their losing ways on their manager?
