Sooze Gives the Minnesota Twins a Detention Lecture

Before we fly off the handle, we'd like to direct you to Sooze's guest post on Big League Stew -- a Detention Lecture given to the Minnesota Twins.

What a difference a year can make; the Minnesota Twins have gone from first to worst in a matter of one season. At a dismal 30 games under .500 with a roster chock-full of players few fans recognize, the defending American League Central champions have a lot of work to do this offseason.

Babes Love Charity Events

A Major League Baseball player's job isn't always to hit a fastball out of the park, or make a spectacular game saving catch. Some of their best work is done outside of the ballpark. Many players get involved with charities and community events, and they don't get nearly enough credit for doing so. That being said, Babes Love Baseball would like to tell you about - and commend - Denard Span and Orlando Hudson from the Minnesota Twins, along with Friends of St. Paul Baseball, for the upcoming "Twins & Pins Bowling Classic."

The folks who brought you the Mauer Golf Tournament and the Molitor Golf Classic are doing it again, this time they're hoping for lots of strikes - on the bowling lanes. Hosted by Orlando Hudson and Denard Span, members of the Minnesota Twins are signing up to participate in the Twins & Pins Bowling Classic to raise money for charity, and you can join them. The Classic will be on Thursday, July 29th at 7pm at the Brunswick Zone XL in Brooklyn Park, MN, and there are still spots open for you to participate as well.

They Say Good Things Come In Threes

Badassery abounded in triplicate last night for Mariners' tradebait hurler Cliff Lee and Twins centerfieder Denard Span.

Lee pitched his third complete game in as many tries, defeating the World Champion Yankees. Despite giving up two homers to Nick Swisher, Lee pitched his little heart out to go all nine last night. He was lights out against A-Rod, who went 0-4 last night, and issued just one walk - his first in thirty eight innings - to drive up his trade value before the deadline. It was his fifth complete game of the season, which is hard to come by these days.

Do You Hit Your Mother With Those Balls??

Talk about a freak accident... Almost as random as a mascot detaching a man's retinas with a wiener, Minnesota Twins centerfielder Denard Span attacked his own mother with balls. (SO many male naughty-bits jokes can be made at the expense of this statement. I prefer to take the high road.)

During the first inning against the Yankees at their ridiculously over-the-top for spring training and the minors Spring Training park, Steinbrenner Field, Span fouled a 3-2 pitch over by the 3rd base dugout and directly into the chest of his mother, Wanda. Span immediately ran over to make sure she was OK. After the paramedics arrived and she declined to go to the hospital, Span proceeded with his at bat, only to get called out on strikes. Span ended up going 0-2 on the day, and left the game after the top of the third - presumably to go buy the biggest bouquet of apology flowers ever.

Much to my delight and amazement, the Minnesota Twins managed to put together two wins -- in a row -- after their 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers Wednesday night, coming back from a 4-run deficit for the second straight day.

This marks the first time in all 19 days of August so far that the Twins have strung together one win after another. Pretty impressive stuff there. Spoiling Ivan Rodriguez's re-debut with his parent team, Denard Span (officially batting .300 on the season) went 3-for-4, hitting the tying double before sliding past Pudge with the go-ahead run on an Orlando Cabrera base hit in the sixth inning to make it 5-4.

What's That Sucking Sound? It's the Twins.

Gil Meche was the big winner in his return from the disabled list Thursday as the Kansas City Royals crushed the Minnesota Twins' hopes and dreams of gaining any ground in the American League Central with a 5-4 victory.

Meche, who is notoriously pretty sucky, gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings in his first start since July 11th. At one point, pretty sure it was the sixth inning, the Twins were handed three walks and still managed not to score, thanks to Nick Punto not quite remembering how to bunt before spankin' new Twin Orlando Cabrera hit into an inning-ending double play. Yikes.

Minnesota Twins: Way to Go, Buddies!

Denard Span, batting leadoff and filling in for the injured Michael Cuddyer in the Minnesota Twins' right field, hit his first big league home run Monday night in the club's 7-0 lashing of the rival Chicago White Sox.

Span, who's batting .318 with a .405 OBP in just 35 games, nailed a two-run shot in the third inning to go along with Justin Morneau's 4 RBIs which gave youngster Kevin Slowey a hefty lead to work with. The 24-year-old righty, never allowing more than one man on base in any inning, struck out five and walked one to help the Twins move within 1.5 games of the division-leading South-Siders.

With six more games left in the season between these two teams -- all at the Dome -- things could get interesting in the race for first in the AL Central.

And I Got Mad Hits Like I Was Rod Carew

Justin Morneau (a.k.a My Canadian Crusher) matched a career high Thursday afternoon by going 5-for-5 with a walk to aid in the Minnesota Twins come-from-behind victory over the Detroit Tigers in the first of a four-game set, halting the club's three-game skid.

After crushing a 425-foot double to deep center in the eighth, a ball that may have been gone in just about any park but Comerica, Morneau lined a two-out bomb into the right-field seats in the 11th to give Minnesota a 7-5 lead.

The extra-inning heroics, made possible by Todd Jones' mustache, came after the closer failed to convert a save for just the second time in 18 opportunities. Nick Punto -- WHO IS BATTING .320 -- singled to lead off the ninth and ended up scoring on a single from Denard Span, who went 4-for-4 with his hot bat that he's been swinging ever since being called up to replace the injured Michael Cuddyer in right. Span was awarded third after the ball got away from Matt Joyce and crossed home on Joe Mauer’s pinch-hit sac fly that tied the game.
