Jayson Werth's Beard was no match for Cole Hamels' left arm Tuesday.

In his first return to Philadelphia since leaving to play for the Washington Nationals, Werth went 0-for-3 with a walk in his team's 4-1 loss to the Phillies. Of course, he was met with boos from his former fans at Citizens Bank Park, but he turned their frowns upside-down when he took off his helmet and tipped it to the crowd: they simply could not resist his charm.

Besides, he's still making $126 million over seven years to bat .270. Nothing is going to bring that guy down.

According to Buster Olney and Tim Kurkjian, the former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder agreed to a seven year, $126 million contract with the Washington Nationals this weekend.

Jayson Werth, who rode my fantasy bench all week to make room for my awesome outfield -- who did nothing but suck on Tuesday, I might add -- stole bags yesterday like Dane Cook steals jokes.

The Philadelphia Phillies outfielder's first steal of the night against the Los Angeles Dodgers came in the form of a double steal between him and Ryan Howard, with Werth snagging third in the fourth inning. He ended up scoring on a Jimmy Rollins single, so good job there.

Jayson Werth absolutely abused the baseball Friday.

The Philadelphia Phillies outfielder homered in his first three at-bats against the Toronto Blue Jays Friday, tying a club record with eight RBIs in a single game.

For starters, he connected on a 0-1 pitch off lefty starter David Purcey in the second inning for a three-run homer to right field. As if that wasn't enough run support, Werth nailed a 425-foot grand slam to right the very next inning. He topped off his incredible performance with a solo shot to left-center in the fifth off reliever Jesse Litsch

"Anything can happen on any given day, I guess," Werth shrugged. "This game is crazy. It's not like I was trying to do anything like that. It just happened. I don't know what else to say. It's just crazy."

Werth set career highs for home runs and RBIs, becoming the 18th player in Phillies history to hit three bombs in a game.

Jayson Werth Gets Another One-Year Deal

The Philadelphia Phillies and Jayson Werth came to an agreement on a $1.7 million, one-year contract Monday, avoiding that ugly little thing called arbitration.

The 27-year-old outfielder hit .298 with eight homers and 49 RBIs last season for the Phillies, who were swept by the Colorado Rockies in the NLDS. Werth spent most of the 63 games he started in right field, platooning with Shane Victorino.

He'll likely play the same role this season, splitting time with Geoff Jenkins, who was acquired in late December. Victorino will probably move to center, replacing the now-San Francisco Giant, Aaron Rowand.

Four Phillies players are still arbitration-eligible, including hard-hitting first baseman Ryan Howard, shortstop Eric Bruntlett, and right-handers Brad Lidge and Ryan Madson.
