Jayson Werth has hit the free agency jackpot.
According to Buster Olney and Tim Kurkjian, the former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder agreed to a seven year, $126 million contract with the Washington Nationals this weekend.
The 31-year-old All-Star, who spent the past four seasons with the Phillies and aided in their 2008 World Series title, batted .296 with a National League-high 46 doubles. He also hit 27 bombs and drove in 85 runs. Plus, he has a badass beard... so there's that.
This could be a pretty sweet deal for the Nationals, who just lost the big bat of Adam Dunn to the Chicago White Sox a few days ago.
However, ESPN and Baseball America's Jerry Crasnick showed off his math skills via Twitter:
Jayson Werth is a fine player, but he has 684 career hits. At a total cost of $126 million, that's $184,210 per hit.Since you put it that way... Yikes.

I'm not quite sure I've made sense of this yet. Why leave the Phillies for the Nats? I know the Nats are an up and coming team, but the Phillies are winning NOW. Maybe the Phils just didn't offer as much money or years as the Nats?
Sad!! I really liked him. Now I have to hate him.
