It was inevitable. After all of the back and forth negotiations between Derek Jeter, his agent Casey Close, and the New York Yankees brass, we just knew this would end with the shortstop in pinstripes, earning a decent living.
Maybe dressing up as elves and dancing the jig helped move things along a little.
According to the Associated Press, the two sides reached a preliminary agreement Saturday on a $51 million, three-year contract which includes an $8 million player option for 2014 that could be worth up to $17 million if he gets back on track and wins a bunch of awards.
Despite his decline at the plate to a .270 batting average with 10 home runs last season -- a dip from a .334 average and 18 bombs the year before -- the Yankees captain drove in one more run for a total of 67 RBI in 2010.
New York also has deal worth $30 million over two years in the works for close Mariano Rivera while awaiting a decision by lefty Andy Pettitte, who may or may not hang up his cleats. In the meantime, they're still chasing free agent Cliff Lee, who is sure to be pursued by the Texas Rangers as well during this week's Winter Meetings.
