With a 3-1 Game 5 victory, the San Francisco Giants have brought the very first World Series title to the Bay Area, 56 years after the organization won it all in 1954 when they still called New York their home.
Facing the once-invincible and indestructible Cliff Lee, Edgar Renteria drove a 2-0 cut fastball over the left-center field fence to score Cody Ross and Juan Uribe, hushing the sellout crowd at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. No one could have seen it coming, but after batting .412 in the series, Renteria was named Most Valuable Player.
Where the hell did these guys come from? They really were the "misfits and castoffs" manager Bruce Bochy deemed them: no Giants player ranked anywhere in the Top 10 of any significant statistical category during the regular season.
A home run by Nelson Cruz in the seventh inning was the only trouble the Rangers gave Tim Lincecum, who struck out 10 batters, walked two and surrendered just three hits.
Let's not forget the bearded closer Brian Wilson, whose ninth inning performance nailed it down for the Giants when he retired Josh Hamilton, Vladimir Guerrero and Cruz in order before being embraced by rookie catcher Buster Posey in celebration of their first ginormous ring.
