In an effort to bolster their lineup midseason, the Atlanta Braves have swapped shortstops with the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Braves also gave the Blue Jays left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes in the five-player deal, adding lefty minor leaguer Tim Collins and minor league shortstop Tyler Pastornicky.
Alex Gonzalez, traded for fellow shortstop Yunel Escobar on Wednesday, is batting .259 with 17 homers and 50 RBI headed into the second half of the season. Not only is he a decent defensive player, he's also pretty damn fast: tied for fifth in the American League with 43 extra-base hits.
Meanwhile, Escobar has been struggling this year, hitting just .238 with absolutely no longballs and 19 RBI after his career-best .299 season last year where he nailed 14 home runs and 76 RBI.
In 10 starts for the AAA Gwinett Braves, Reyes was 1-5 with a 5.70 ERA. He pitched just 3.1 innings this season in the big leagues, surrendering two homers and nine earned runs. Yikes. Collins was 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA and nine saves in 35 games for the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats and Pastornicky was batting .258 with 16 doubles, 35 RBI and 24 stolen bags in 77 games with the Class A Dunedin Jays.
