Twins Hope Joe Mauer's Injury Isn't Serious

Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer was scratched from Saturday night's game against the Boston Red Sox after excperiencing stiffness in his right thigh while runing during batting practice. He underwent a precautionary MRI this morning on his left quad muscle to pinpoint the problem.

The AL Batting Champ has been bothered by stiffness occasionally since the start of the season, but it has never been as sore as it was after Friday night's game.

This isn't the first time the quad has interfered with Mauer's spot in the lineup, and this time the stiffness was much more severe than in the past. The hometown boy told Ron Gardehire before the game last night that he might not be able to catch in an emergency and certainly wouldn't be able to run the bases.

Mauer's injury could not be more ill-timed as the club is already without their right fielder and cleanup hitter, Michael Cuddyer, who suffered a bruised back in a comical (not so much anymore) helmet-over-cleats tumble on the basepath during the Tampa Bay Devil Rays series this past week.

Sadly, the banged-up Twins will be without their regular #3 and #4 hitters again today for the series finale when Sidney Ponson takes the hill against veteran Curt Schilling.

Mauer is batting .353 with 1 homer and 14 RBIs this season while Cuddy is hitting .284 with 2 longballs and 19 RBIs.

Update: Joe Mauer has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Anytime you take away 200 RBIs and 50 homers from a lineup, the results aren't going to be pretty. UNLESS OF COURSE YOU HAVE PIRANHAS TO DO THE JOB!

That might not be pretty, either. But they get the job done!
