Matt Garza helped the Tampa Bay Rays go from worst to first, why wouldn't he be able to bring the Chicago Cubs their first World Championship since 1908? Clearly, it's a matter of science.
The 27-year-old right-hander was traded to the Cubs this weekend in an eight-player deal that brings outfielder Fernando Perez and lefty Zachary Rosscup along with him. Meanwhile, the Rays get promising righty Chris Archer, shortstop Hak-Ju Lee, catcher Robinson Chirinos, as well as outfielders Sam Fuld and Brandon Guyer.
If you're not familiar with how awesome Garza is, here's the rundown: the 2008 ALCS MVP, who was a first round pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2005, is a career 42-44 with six complete games and a 3.97 ERA over 121 big league outings, including 118 as a starter between the Twins and Rays. Last season, he went 15-10 with a 3.91 ERA, and of course, let's not forget the no-hitter he tossed against the Detroit Tigers back in July.
In short, he's kind of a badass.
Garza will join a rotation that already includes Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster. Impressive! It must be pretty exciting for Garza to go from a team that won the American League East last season to one that finished fifth in the National League Central.
At least he'll be familiar with former Rays teammate Carlos Pena, who became the Cubs new first baseman in early December.
