Jim Thome Mashes Taters No. 573, 574
Congratulations to Jim Thome, who tied the legendary Harmon Killebrew for 10th on the All-Time Home Runs list with career longball No. 573 Saturday afternoon.
Jim Jam took right-hander Wade Davis deep in the bottom of the second inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 1-0 lead over the Tampa Bay Rays at Target Field.
Two innings later, on the very next swing, he launched home run No. 574 to take sole possession of 10th place on the All-Time Jacks list. Incredible. Then he hugged every single person in the dugout.
Attention was then turned to the Target Field big screen, where Killebrew delivered a special message, congratulating the designated hitter and making me tear up a little.
Thome, who is seeing more time in the Twins lineup these days, is batting .254 with 10 home runs and 24 RBI on the season. The most impressive part of his accomplishments? He's done it all without the help of performance-enhancing drugs.
Speaking of steroids, next up on the All-Time list is Mark McGwire, sitting at ninth with 583 career bombs.

JIM JAM!!!!!!!!!!!
Unbelievable!
My mother-in-law cried too. Me? In celebration I ate a 30 oz porterhouse and fired 12 gauge shells into the air. That's what Jim would want.
I'd like to forget about that game, to be honest. But it was nice to see ol' Jim Jam get on the all-time Top Ten HR list.
It was really special to get to witness Thome's day first hand. Thome and Killebrew both have so much class and both have done the "right way".
Here's hoping he zips by Mr, McGwire very, very quickly.
