The Atlanta Braves, in an attempt to make themselves seem younger, released 305-game winner Tom Glavine this afternoon.After undergoing surgery to repair his shoulder and elbow, the aging lefty semi-triumphantly returned to the team he spent the first 16 seasons of his career with (1987-2002) before dating the Mets for five years and then deciding he missed his old flame.
So, am I the only one surprised by this move? I thought he was all set to make his big league return pretty soon. He tossed six scoreless innings for the Class-A Rome Braves Tuesday night and said himself that he was ready to pitch in the majors again.
He obviously wanted to retire in a Braves uni, and now he's a bitter, 43-year-old free agent. Kinda sad. But retirement apparently wasn't on his agenda just yet, as general manager Frank Wren explains,
"We gave him the option, 'If you want to retire, you can retire as a Brave,' He asked us to release him."In other Atlanta news, the club acquired All-Star centerfielder Nate McLouth from the Pittsburgh Pirates for three prospects: outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, along with pitchers Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke.

It's official. Frank Wren hates Braves fans.
Glavine was cut because Wren didn't want to drop a million on him just to see if he had anything in the tank. Kinda stupid if you ask me. Why sign dude to begin with if you don't want to pay him anything? Wren is not exactly handling things the way that I would like to see, but nabbing McLouth was huge. Did he give up too much for him is the question. More info on this over on my site if you want it.
The Braves are about to shake up the NL though. Can't. Wait. For. Saturday.
TSI- You are so right about the $1 million bonus Glavine would've gotten had he entered the majors this season. Like the Braves can't afford to drop a mill on a franchise legend?!
Look, I watched glavin throw his last pitch in a brave uniform in Rome. I felt bad seeing him go but when you work in the sports biz thing in the pros it is about the money. With today's time as money not flowing like it needs to that is why they could not afford to keep him. Plus this was his last season. You have to look at it from both sides.Far as the McLouth, I had one of my friends traded for him but hey that is the biz...lol.
