Weed Out the Crap: Sidney Ponson

The Texas Rangers couldn't seem to trade for hefty right-hander Sidney Ponson. So, they released him in exchange for minor league pitcher Thomas Diamond.

Ponson was designated for assignment June 6th for "disrespecting teammates and club personnel" according to general manager Jon Daniels. Sucking at baseball may have had a thing or two to do with it, though he's managed a 4-1 record and 3.88 ERA on the season thus far.

Diamond, a 25-year-old former first-round pick, has already made five rehab starts after missing all of last season for elbow ligament replacement surgery. He is 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA in those starts... and apparently better than Sir Sid at throwing baseballs.

When Ponson was on the trading block a few years back via the Orioles, the Braves were sniffing around him.

Now it seems like a logical choice to pick him up as a low cost fill in for our banged up staff. And we've had our liability personalities in the past but I'm not sure I really need to be that desperate if he has as much of an attitude as I've heard about.

I don't expect the Braves to make a move on him but I wouldn't put it past us. We love those waiver wire guys (see Jaret Wright).

Rumor has it down here that e got into a fight with Michael Young that caused Michael Young to miss a game with an injured finger. Also hearing that he is an absolute ass in the locker room. If a team like the Rangers who have a huge need for pitching will let him go, then he must be a giant cancer.
