A 40-year-old lefty bat with wheels, Lofton is expected to arrive in Cleveland brimming with nostalgia, just in time for the series opener against the Minnesota Twins tonight.
In nine seasons with Cleveland, he earned four consecutive gold gloves out in center, made five trips to the All-Star game and became a fan favorite as he aided in the Indians' domination of the division throughout the 90s.
Consequently, they haven't made the playoffs since he left as a free agent after the 2001 season.
The Tribe came into this weekend 1.5 games behind first-place Detroit Tigers in the AL Central, leading the wild card.
They needed another outfielder and Lofton is swinging a solid bat, hitting .303 with seven home runs, 23 RBIs and 21 stolen bags for the Rangers. He's the Indians' franchise leader in steals with 450 and ranks third in team history with 951 runs scored.
Right-handed backstop Max Ramirez, a youngster from Venezuela, is batting .303 with 12 homers and 62 RBIs in 77 games this season with the Class-A Kingston Indians.
