Joe Mauer Lands on the DL

It's just one of those days around here where the bad news keeps on flowing.

My hometown hero has landed himself on the DL with a strained left quadriceps muscle. Naturally, I will be applying ice and rubbing his thigh muscle 24/7 until it's all better.

Joe Mauer had an MRI exam this morning, missing his second straight game. Test results revealed a strain, which could keep him out for 2 or more weeks.

The injury has bothered the reigning AL batting Champ for most of the season, but didn't really flare up until Friday night when he was running the basepath. The Twins scratched Mauer from the lineup Saturday night about an hour before game time when the muscle tightened up on him during batting practice.

Veteran catcher Mike Redmond started in his place again on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. In a related move, the club recalled catcher Chris Heintz from the AAA Rochester Red Wings to take Mauer's place at the backstop following Sunday's 4-3 series finale loss to the Boston Red Sox. The move is retroactive to May 5th.

Mauer had played in all 28 games with Minnesota up until Saturday and is batting an AL fifth-best .353. He said he wasn't sure how much time he would miss.
"You don't want to put a timetable on it," Joe shrugged. "It could be two weeks, or it could be more. Hopefully it's not much more."
Hopefully.

I hope Cuddy's back gets better in a hurry. Those two injuries have really shaken up the lineup.

No doubt, Jake. There's definitely a chemistry between the numbers 3 thru 6 hitters in the lineup - when you take one or two of them away, it's bound to jar things. Hopefully a days' rest will get them back on track. The Twins are fortunate to have some a great backup catcher in Redmond, too. He's awesome.
