The Boston Red Sox became the first team in the big leagues to clinch a playoff spot Saturday.
Trailing 6-5 to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays coming into the ninth inning Saturday, they rallied with dramatic homers by Jason Varitek and Julio Lugo for an 8-6 victory.
Daisuke Matsuzaka gave up five runs on six hits over 6.2 innings, walking three and striking out seven. Eric Gagne, believe it or not, pitched a scoreless eighth for the win. The Papelboner worked the ninth for his 36th save in 39 chances, making at least the AL wild card Boston's.
Terry Francona, who seemed none too pleased with Matsuzaka, became the first manager to lead the Red Sox into the postseason three times."I think we all feel like we have huge aspirations," said Francona. The Red Sox hold a 2.5-game lead in the East over the New York Yankees, who beat the Blue Jays 12-11 in extras.
We may have word from Lizzy on this, even though she is living it up in Hawaii right now. Leis... palm trees... tan surfers... tequila... Oh wait, that's my tropical fantasy.
