Friday's Babelicious Scoreboard

Jack Cust is a big boy.

The hard-hitting DH had 7 RBIs to help lift the Oakland Athletics over the Detroit Tigers Friday, including a three-run double in the third off Jordan Tata and, after the A's blew a 7-run lead, a grand slam off reliever Macay McBride (1-1, 4.96 ERA) in the sixth.

The rookie Tata lasted only 2 innings for the Tigers after allowing seven runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout.

Detroit's bullpen surrendered nine earned runs, including four each by Zach Miner and McBride, who was handed just his second career loss in 131 games.

Travis Buck had an excellent night at the plate, going 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs and Donnie Murphy added 3 runs of his own with a two-run homer in the third for Oakland. Marco Scutaro drove in two runs as well and Nick Swisher kicked the whole thing off with a sac fly in the first.

A's starter Joe Blanton was roughed up for 4 innings, allowing nine earned runs on 7 hits with 2 K's and a walk. Oakland's bullpen held down the fort though, with Ruddy Lugo (3-0, 8.84 ERA) earning the win after allowing 1 run and 2 hits over 2 innings pitched. Andrew Brown and Huston Street combined for 3 scoreless innings.

Marcus Thames nailed 3 RBIs for the Tigers, who have lost 7 of their last 9 games, falling to 11-18 since the All-Star break.

Magglio Ordonez and Gary Sheffield each had 2 RBIs for Detroit as Sean Casey and Placido Polanco both drove in a run, as well.
