Sammy Sosa Hits Career Homer No. 600

After an entire year away from baseball, Sammy Sosa became the fifth member of the 600-homer club last night, smoking a 1-2 cutter to right field... fittingly, against his former team.

After his jog around the bases, Sosa was instantly mobbed by his Texas Rangers teammates while the scoreboard flashed shots of the other four members of the elite club: Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays. Too bad Sosa totally used steroids.

Chicago Cubs starter Jason Marquis was the lucky guy to give it up - the 364th pitcher the veteran has nailed one off of over his 18 big league seasons. Marquis, who seemed to struggle with is control, allowed 6 runs - 4 earned - on 8 hits, walking four and striking out three over five innings.

Sosa played for the Cubs from 1992-2004, winning the '98 NL MVP award with seven All-Star appearances, hitting 545 home runs in that span. This marks Sammy's 12th longball of this season and his 52nd run driven in.

But it hasn't been all sunshine and daisies all those years. Like Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds, Sosa used is suspected of using steroids in the dark era, before they were banned by baseball. He was also busted red-handed with a corked bat in 2003.

However, he has never had a positive steroids test and was not implicated in the BALCO scandal that will haunt Bonds until the end of time.

Sooze -

The Twins really impressed me this week. Really great on the fundamantals and unbelievable outfield defense, which seems to be a combination of ability and coaching (i.e., placement).

Last night was a game that was ripe for the Mets' taking - Perez on the hill at home against a shaky young starter who we had on the ropes. But they hung in there, didn't lose their cool and then pounced when the oppotunities presented themselves. Well done.

Personally, I'm just numb at this point. 6 straight lost series. 10 leads blown in the last 12 losses. A bullpen that might as well be a batting practice machine. Mental and physical errors. No sense of anything other than dread and desperation.

This is what it looks like inside the abyss.

Mike, the Mets have the pitching and the offense to kick ass all year - teams have little slumps and streaks throughout the season, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

The Twins rock my socks.

Always with the wise comments. Or is that wise-ass comments?

It was a great series, though. Besides the Mets losing it.
