In the midst of Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox's quest to be the most ejected skipper in the world, Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella had a conniption of his own for his long-awaited, first tossing of the season.
To make matters worse, his team fell 5-3 to the Braves last night, the Cubs' sixth straight loss. We're going to go ahead and avoid mentioning the $300 million the club spent in the off-season...
Sweet Lou was ejected after kicking an enormous amount of dirt and tossing his hat several times in reaction to Angel Pagan getting caught stealing third base in the eighth inning. He may have kicked an ump, too, as the crowd tossed debris onto the field and chanted, "Lou! Lou! Lou!"
Kicking, Lou? Really?
Those are the claims of Crew Chief Bruce Froemming, any way. Piniella says he did not kick third-base umpire Mark Wegner, even though I'm sure he would've loved to.
"Froemming is the one that put his hands on me," he said.Lou said that Pagan seemed safe from the dugout. After reviewing the play however, he noted that Blue had it right all along. If he did kick an official, it could mean deep trouble for one of the game's most uppity managers.
Carlos Zambrano/Michael Barrett Update: The two scufflers were fined yesterday for their altercation the day before, which started in the dugout before the bottom of the fifth inning and ended in the clubhouse.
Zambrano blamed himself for the fight, saying "It's all my fault." Barrett said he appreciated that and added there was no need for the pitcher to apologize... cause the last thing he wants to do is aggravate the enormous man.
"I think it happened because Zambrano and I are so close," Barrett said. "I think of him like a brother. It's like a sibling rivalry."Atlanta Braves Notes: Veteran John Smoltz, day-to-day with an injured pitching shoulder and pinkie finger, will miss his scheduled start today.
