Jose Mesa Released By Tigers

The Detroit Tigers released right-hander Jose Mesa after their 7-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.

Signed as a free agent in December, Mesa went 1-1 with an inflated 12.34 ERA in 16 appearances for Detroit, his eighth club in a big league career that began 20 long years ago with the Baltimore Orioles.
"They gave me a chance and I didn't do my job," Mesa explained. "I'll see what is out there and if there's nothing, I'll go home and relax. If this is it, I'm happy with [my career]."
In 982 career games, the 41-year-old veteran has a losing 79-107 record with a 4.33 ERA, but ranks 13th on the career list with 320 saves.

Righty reliever Fernando Rodney, sidelined since May 21st with tendinitis in his right guns, is expected to be activated tomorrow, just in time for their three-game series at Texas.

Rodney is 1-4 with a 4.71 ERA and one save in 19 games this season.

To this day I never understood why the Tigers made Mesa wear his age on his jersey.
