Thursday's Babelicious Scoreboard

Chicago Cubs (18-21) manager Lou Piniella watched relievers Ryan Dempster and Scott Eyre blow a four-run lead in the bottom of the ninth againt the New York Mets (26-14), losing for the sixth time in eight games last night.

David Newhan led off with a single and Carlos Gomez singled with one out. Piniella then headed to the hill for a talking-to with Dempster, who loaded the bases with a walk to Carlos Beltran.

Endy Chavez drew a walk that forced home a run, and Ruben Gotay's RBI single was the last straw. Enter Eyre from the bullpen, who immediately gave up a David Wright pinch hit-RBI single to make it 5-4. Carlos Delgado's two-run single polished off the five-run rally.

Jason Vargas pitched seven innings for the Mets, allowing five runs on 6 hits while Ambiorix Burgos got the win for pitching the eighth and ninth.

Angel Guzman lasted only five innings for the Cubbies, giving up only 1 earned run on 6 hits and walking two.
