Atlanta Braves husky closer Bob Wickman was placed on the disabled list today with an upper back strain.
This move comes just one day after the veteran blew his second straight save. Wickman was unable to hang onto a two-run, final-inning lead in a 9-7, 11-inning loss to the Colorado Rockies on Sunday when he walked three and was charged with two runs.
Wickman also blew a save that cost Tim Hudson - owner of the lowest ERA in the majors at 1.22 - a big win on Wednesday in Florida. Big Bob also gave up two hits and walked two in a non-save situation on Friday.
Braves manager Bobby Cox claims Wickman's control problems are based on his inability to extend his arm and follow through with his pitches - not the 240+ pounds of meat he's throwing behind them.
Meanwhile, Atlanta has activated reliever Chad Paronto (also rather husky), who had been out with a strained groin muscle since April 14th. There's a good chance Mike Gonzalez or Rafael Soriano could be used as closers while Wickman is out of commission.
