Oakland Athletics utility backup Marco Scutaro was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday for minor league righties, Kristian Bell and Graham Godfrey. The 32-year-old infielder, who has a tendency for game-winning hits, filled in for both second baseman Mark Ellis and shortstop Bobby Crosby in recent seasons while they were injured, but the A's really want to give Donnie Murphy a shot to play second fiddle.
Scutaro hit .260 with seven homers and 41 RBIs in 104 games in 2007, and with Oakland missing out on the playoffs after reaching the ALCS in 2006, adding pitching is never a bad idea.
Godfrey, 23, went 6-7 with a 3.98 ERA in 21 starts for the Class-A Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League, striking out 74 in 110.2 innings.
Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Bell was 3-7 with a 5.33 ERA in 33 games with the Class-A Dunedin Blue Jays. Both losing pitchers. Awesome.
