The year is 1995, and it was the last time the Cincinnati Reds won the National League Central division title. In fact, it was the last time they made it past the regular season at all.

The Chicago Cubs continue to dominate, keeping things interesting and Brewers fans sweating.

After Tuesday's 5-0 victory over Dusty Baker and the Cincinnati Reds, the NL Central-leading Cubs (77-48) improved to a season-high 29 games over .500, winning their last 7-of-8 and 17-of-21.

Dusty Baker was given a three-year deal Saturday by the Cincinnati Reds, agreeing to manage the team after seven consecutive losing seasons.

After entertaining us for a year on Baseball Tonight, the 58-year-old Baker will become the first black man to manage in Cincy, home of the game's first professional franchise.

The Reds, hoping for some stability from Baker, have gone through two owners, three GMs and four managers since 2003. He will replace Pete Mackanin, who had the job on an interim basis after Jerry Narron was fired in July.

Baker managed the San Francisco Giants for 10 seasons, leading them to the World Series in 2002. He left after a falling out with ownership however, and was picked up by the Chicago Cubs, who went to the NLCS in his first season. The team's World Series ticket was crumpled up and thrown away with just five outs remaining, but managed another winning record under Baker in 2004 to complete their first back-to-back winning seasons since 1971-72.

In 2006, they finished an NL-worst 66-96, and that was that for Dusty. Maybe he'll have better luck in Cincinnati?

Dusty Baker Always Looked Good In Red

Wearing Cubbie blue didn't work out so well for him, but reports surfaced out of Cincinnati on Thursday evening that Dusty Baker is seeking to don the red of, well, the Reds.

Cincinnati Reds GM Wayne Krivsky was evasive about the report that Baker interviewed for the club's manager position, left vacant since Jerry Narron was fired mid-season.

"Until we have something to announce, we're not going to discuss it openly in the press," Krivsky said.

The old "neither confirm nor deny" routine, eh?

The Reds' interim manager Pete Mackanin is still being reported as a candidate for the vacancy as well.
