Cardinals Rally Past Phillies, Cliff Lee is Human After All

The Philadelphia Phillies, as damn near unbeatable as they've been all season, were unable to stop the St. Louis Cardinals from rallying for a 5-4 win Sunday night to even up the National League Division Series at 1-1.

The Amazing Cliff Lee blew a four-run lead against the NL Wild Card winners, giving up five runs on 12 hits with nine strikeouts in 6-plus innings to lose his third consecutive playoff start. He's now 0-3 with a 7.13 ERA over his last three outings... looks like he's human after all.

St. Louis took the lead in the seventh when Allen Craig led off with a triple thanks to a botched catch by center fielder Shane Victorino. Then Albert Pujols, who had struck out in his previous two at bats, lined one over Jimmy Rollins' head to give his team the 5-4 lead.

Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter, pitching on just three days rest, struggled on the mound as well, but Tony La Russa used like 19 relievers to get the job done. Actually, six St. Louis relief pitchers combined for six scoreless innings and one hit, with Jason Motte getting the final four outs and Octavio Dotel earning the win. Pretty sure the Cardinals skipper was happy to see the game end in nine innings, since the only guy left in the bullpen was Jake Westbrook, who was busted yawning with two out left in the game.

Not a good night for Philly sports fans, with the Eagles blowing a 20-point lead over the San Francisco 49ers for a 24-23 loss just hours earlier across the street.

The series will shift to St. Louis Tuesday for Game 3 when the Phillies put Cole Hamels -- the third straight All-Star pitcher to face the Cards -- on the hill against Jaime Garcia at 4pm ET on TBS.

P.S. Here's a video of John Jay smoking Carlos Ruiz during their home plate collision in the fourth inning:
