Jonny Gomes is Sporting a Nationals Jersey
The Cincinnati Reds traded Jonny Gomes away to the Washington Nationals Tuesday in return for two minor leaguers, leaving the door wide open in Cincinnati's outfield for former first-round pick Yonder Alonso.
The struggling left fielder was batting just .211 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI headed into Wednesday night's game against the Florida Marlins. His reaction to the trade:
"I’m bitter about leaving because I love these guys. I love where this team’s at, I love where they’re about to go. But as we know, it’s a business. By the other token, a team reached out that wanted my services."
Meanwhile, the Reds received left-hander Chris Manno and outfielder Bill Rhinehart, along with some cash money to help pay part of Gomes' $1.75 million salary.
Alonso, the seventh overall pick in the June 2008 draft, is a first baseman by trade, but he'll have to play second fiddle to Joey Votto and play left field for now. The left-handed hitter batted .296 with 24 doubles, 12 homers and 56 RBI in 91 games with the AAA Louisville Bats, spending 21 games at first and 62 in the outfield. So yeah, he can hit.
By the way, the Mariners lost again. Eric Wedge is officially on suicide watch.

I'm sure you Minnesota girls already know this, but Bill Rhinehart played for the Duluth Huskies in the Northwoods League.
I didn't know anyone else cared! I'm a St. Cloud River Bats fan myself. :)
