The New York Yankees placed their All-Star shortstop on the 15-day disabled list due to a mildly strained right calf before Tuesday night's 12-4 win over the American League champion Texas Rangers.
Jeter limped off the field Monday night against the Cleveland Indians, four innings after nailing his 2,994th hit. Of course, he is much more concerned with helping his team win ballgames than his illustrious career milestone:
"I don’t like not to play. Whether it’s going for 3,000 hits or 100 hits, I’d rather be out there playing."
Entering his 17th big league season, this marks the first time since 2003 that Jeter has landed on the DL, and only his fifth career trip in all. Love him or hate him, that's pretty impressive for an everyday infielder.
While Yankees fans were hoping he'd hit 3,000 in the Bronx, the likelihood of that happening is pretty small. When he's eligible to come off the DL on June 29, his team will be in the middle of a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Yankee Stadium, but he'll probably end up getting the six hits needed against the Mets or Indians on the road.
