Jayson Werth's Beard was no match for Cole Hamels' left arm Tuesday.
In his first return to Philadelphia since leaving to play for the Washington Nationals, Werth went 0-for-3 with a walk in his team's 4-1 loss to the Phillies. Of course, he was met with boos from his former fans at Citizens Bank Park, but he turned their frowns upside-down when he took off his helmet and tipped it to the crowd: they simply could not resist his charm.
Besides, he's still making $126 million over seven years to bat .270. Nothing is going to bring that guy down.
Hamels not only pitched a five-hitter, he also had two hits, including a third-inning triple. He struck out six and walked one in his eighth career complete game. What a badass. Meanwhile, losing pitcher Livan Hernandez threw a curveball that was clocked at 59 mph. His fastball topped out at 85... similar to what many pitchers would consider a decent breaking ball.
The four-time defending National League East champs are on a roll: they've won nine of 12 and are 19-9 overall. Vance Worley, getting his second start as he fills in for the injured Joe Blanton, will take the hill against Jason Marquis Wednesday evening at 7:05pm ET. Better luck this time, Jay!
