Andruw Jones and the New York Yankees agreed to a $2 million, one-year contract on Thursday, according to an anonymous leaker familiar with team negotiations. The deal, which includes the opportunity to earn an additional $1.2 million in performance bonuses, is pending a physical.
Jones is expected to make some sort of impact as a right-handed slugger behind Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher... although I don't predict much slugging happening for him at all.
The 33-year-old is long past his prime, hitting a total of 36 homers over the last two seasons with the Chicago White Sox. This, after nailing a career-best 51 bombs for the Atlanta Braves back in 2005 before smashing 41 the following season.
The former star outfielder even has some history with the Bronx Bombers, smashing two longballs in his rookie season with the Braves during Game One of the 1996 World Series, which New York ended up winning in six.
Those days seem to be long gone for Andruw. Going yard 19 times last season for the White Sox, he batted just .230 with 48 RBI and 73 strikeouts in 107 games. Let's not even get started on his injuries from last season, highlighted by back spasms and neck stiffness. However, I commend the Yankees for giving the guy a shot.

He sucks now. I LOVED him as a Brave, but man his career has nosedived.
I'm glad to see a team give him another shot, and of course the NYY have the dough to spend so what the hell! Good luck to Andruw, I hope he finds his power again.

Yeah...that's not going to happen. Too bad such a great talent just fell to pieces so early.
