Baltimore Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon surrendered to police Monday, facing an involuntary manslaughter charge in a fatal New Year’s Eve shooting in the Dominican Republic.
Free agent second baseman Julio Lugo was hanging out with Simon, and eventually convinced him to turn himself in after fleeing the scene.
According to his lawyer, Carlos Olivares, Simon was merely firing off celebratory shots into the air, which ended up killing his 25-year-old cousin, Michel Castillo Almonte, and wounding his other cousin, a 17-year-old boy.
However, Public Prosecutor Victor Mueses has a different story:
The version that we have is that there was a dispute between two women and [Simon] tried to dissolve it, firing a shot that ended up wounding a young person in the arm and that same bullet lodged in the chest of the deceased.Clearly, we've all watched enough cop dramas to know that ballistics testing will determine whether or not Simon's weapon was the one that delivered the fatal bullet. What a crappy way to kick off 2011.
