Talk about a comeback.
The Commissioner's Office announced Wednesday that Vladimir Guerrero has won the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award. The Texas Rangers' big bat helped his team earn not only their first ever trip to the ALCS, but also the first World Series appearance in the team's 50-year history.
Guerrero, a nine-time All-Star, batted .306 with 25 homers, 106 RBIs and 73 runs in 129 games from the DH spot. The most amazing part of the whole thing: he struck out only 56 times in 523 at-bats.
Vlad was also named the American League Comeback Player of the Year by The Sporting News in recognition of his terrific 2010 season. At 35 years old, the veteran slugger has a .320 career average with 2,427 hits and 436 homers, which are stats that could come in handy for a Hall of Fame case.
Guerrero, who's a free agent once again, became the first Rangers player to be honored as the big league's best designated hitter since Rafael Palmeiro back in 1999.
The award, renamed in 2004 after the former Seattle Mariners DH who earned the honor five times, has been handed to the best DH in the league every year since 1973.
The Toronto Blue Jays' Adam Lind won the award last season, while this year Guerrero beat out David Ortiz, who won it five straight years between 2003-07.
