Champagne Floods Sparse Tropicana Field

These people love their Rays. They also paid for their seats.

If the Rays clinch a playoff berth and only 17,891 people are there to see it, did it really happen?

While the American League East title -- along with the best record in the league -- is still up for grabs, the Rays did indeed clinch their second playoff berth ever Tuesday night with a 5-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

David Price, who went off about the minimal attendance at Tropicana Field Monday via Twitter, struck out eight and surrendered six hits, allowing just one runner past second base over eight solid innings.

The lefty phenom spent much of the day sweating over his fan criticism:
That was a nightmare. I knew if I didn’t throw well, I was going to be done with the fans. All day. Everything that led up to it was terrible. We want more fans here, obviously. We love our fans that come, that’s not what I was saying last night.
More folks did head out to the ballpark Tuesday -- over 5,000 more than the night before. Attendance should nearly triple that Wednesday night since the organization went overboard and will hand out 20,000 free tickets at the gate tonight.

Manager Joe Maddon is pretty confident in his team:
It’s different this year. I’m already looking forward to the next goal, and that’s a good thing. It gets to the point where you expect to be in the playoffs on an annual basis.
Meanwhile, the division rival New York Yankees also earned a playoff spot with their 6-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays last night. The Rays' magic number to clinch their second AL East title in three years is any combination of four Tampa Bay wins and New York losses. Luckily for the Rays, they own the tiebreaker after going 10-8 in the season series. This is anyone's division!

But if they really want to put rear ends in the seats at Tropicana Field this postseason -- without having to give away tickets -- maybe charging a $100 premium for the right to buy playoff tickets is not the best move.

Maybe the Twins will get their heads out of their asses and capture the best record in the league!

We just drove by the field to park and there is an INSANE amount of people there.

Wait, one minute they're giving away a shitload of tickets and the next they're charging an arm and a leg just to be able to buy them? I'm confused.
