After considering for a moment whether he'd like to be traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Derrek Lee politely declined.
It was very tempting, I didn't just say no right away... For me and my family, the best thing to do is to stay here. The Chicago Cubs first baseman used his veteran power to block the trade, having been in the league for ten seasons and with the same club for five.
According to a source close to team negotiations, the 34-year-old Lee vetoed the trade about a week-and-a-half ago. In the final year of his five-year, $65 million contract, he's batting just .249 with 11 homers and 44 RBI.
The Halos moved on also, swapping two minor league pitchers for third baseman Alberto Callespo on July 22 with the Kansas City Royals, who also shipped Scott Podsednik off the crosstown Dodgers this week.
So what's D. Lee have against LA? He's currently building a house in Southern California, after all... to retire in.
