A Ballpark Stimulus Would Be Pretty Sweet

Wake up Bud! We're fricking dirt poor! The many scores of outraged, frugal fans have spoken. And Bud Selig has answered. Sort of.

In these tough economic times, some of us ride our bikes to work and school. Others have cut down on going out to eat or sadly, even slowed down on the binge-drinking. One thing we shouldn't have to give up is a trip to the ballpark to watch our favorite teams play our favorite game.

Those empty seats in the shiny new palaces of New York have not gone unnoticed by commissioner Selig.

It's not that he's asked the Yankees and Mets to lower their ticket prices, but he may have hinted at it. Ultimately, it's up to them.

Selig explained Thursday that the two teams will discuss their lofty ticket prices, but he's not making any promises. The Yankees of course declined comment about their mall with the baseball field hidden somewhere inside, and the Mets said they hadn't really considered making any changes. The Yanks are charging between $500-$2,625 for Legends Suite tickets in 25 different sections at the new ballpark, covering the first nine rows around the infield. That area that contains 1,895 seats.

The Mets have less premium seats near home plate at a much lower cost, but they're still charging an average of $175-$495 for 1,567 seats in the Delta Club, which includes the 20 rows lined up between the dugouts. In all fairness, you can still head out to Citi Field for $11 if you'd like a nose-bleed.

New Yorkers, I hope you have HD and a comfy couch. Anything is better than ending up with an empty refrigerator, gas tank and wallet just to see your team up close and in person. Unless, of course, you'd like that priceless tour of Yankee Stadium, which you can find here for free.

Speaking of stadiums, here's a great article from The Love of Sports, checking out the best ever ballpark promo days. See ya Monday!

I think Yankee Stadium is the epitome of NY greed. $2625 for one seat at a ballpark to watch one game...that's ridiculous. Most of us can recall going to the game with out parents, sitting in the cheap $7 seats and we had a blast. If my kid cant have a good time at a game because I didn't drop a grand on her ticket....she has no respect for the game and shouldnt be there at all.

It's a shame what baseball has become....I'd say since the 94' strike....a crying shame.

I still love it though....from my couch.

Amen to that, Jake.

I feel guilty paying $60 to sit behind home plate at the Metrodome...

Ballpark stimulus packages shrunk because of steroid use.

@ Tuffy: LOL!
@ Jake: Couldn't have said it better myself! We have reached a new phase of ridiculousness.

Heck, I would love for DirecTV to give me a break on my MLB Extra Innings. I don't live in an MLB market anymore, and the closest one (several hours away) is a team I wouldn't pay to watch. This is about the only entertainment I have. We don't go to clubs, movies or out on the town too often. Sure, I love to take the family to our local minor league games, but it's short season Single A, which is like watching Little League. And I get to watch my son play for free twice a week. So come on DirecTV, help a sister out!

I hope they stay empty, even in the playoffs - if they ever get there again. it's a slap in the face to fans and they deserve everything they have coming to 'em.

Ah, that photo is Selig at his finest. Sleeping through another disaster.

@ Plato: Looks like it's from one of the games when he reluctantly showed up to see if Bonds would pass the Hammer with #756. He was exhausted from practicing that golf clap for days.
