John Russell, officially the new Pittsburgh Pirates skipper, knows a challenge when he sees one, which is why he took the job to manage a team with 15 consecutive losing seasons.He's also very forgiving.
Released by the Bucs as their third-base coach two seasons ago, the same team now believes he's better fit to manage than he was to coach along the third baseline.
He was hired Monday to succeed Jim Tracy and become the club's fifth manager since their last winning season in 1992. For the last two seasons, he managed the Ottawa Lynx -- the Philadelphia Phillies' AAA team -- going 55-88 in 2007.
Russell, a former big league backstop who caught one of Nolan Ryan's no-hitters, played backup for the Phillies, Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers from 1984-93, hitting a career .225 with 34 homers and 129 RBIs in 448 games.
