Which is why we love us some Jake Peavy.
The future Cy Young Award winner is ready to lead his San Diego Padres to the National League West title -- on just three days rest. Peavy threw 99 pitches in seven innings Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing only two hits for his NL-leading 16th win and shrinking his ERA to 2.10 -- the lowest in the majors.
Not to mention the guy has 206 strikeouts.
Now he wants to take the hill Wednesday for the series finale against the rival Arizona Diamondbacks, behind veteran Greg Maddux and fellow badass, Chris Young.
"You look at the situation, there are pros and cons," bargains Peavy. "It's a chance that needs to be taken. I'd love a chance to compete in this series, if that's the way it plays out. I'd love that chance... I don't think it's that big a deal."The timing is right, too.
Since Aug. 19th, when the Babybacks had a nice 5-game cushion in the West, they've lost nine of 14, including 6 of their last 8. Over the last week, they're 1-4 against San Diego.
Meanwhile, the Friars have won 8-of-11 going from five back to one up in just three weeks. With less than a month left in the season, manager Bud Black wants to make sure Peavy feels good before giving him the go-ahead.
The way I see it, baseball wasn't always this way. Pitchers weren't always treated with white gloves and there wasn't always a relief corps to step in when their arms were tired.
Give him the ball.

When I was young, I saw Luis Tiant (as an Indian) set a team record by striking out 22 batters in 19 innings; the league record was 23.. but more innings.
Tiant went on to pitch his normal spot in the rotation 4 days later.
Give Peevy the ball.
Those dimples...
