Jose Reyes stole three bases last night. And he went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a homer. Need I say more?
Oliver Perez just plain out-dueled Roger Clemens, helping the New York Mets win the opener of the season's second Subway Series 2-0 and putting an end to their five-game skid and their rival's nine-game winning streak.
Perez (7-5, 2.93 ERA) allowed five hits over 7.1 good innings for his second victory over the Bronx Bombers this season. He struck out six and walked three.
The NL East-leading Mets (37-28) were in a bit of a slump, having lost nine of their previous ten games, while the Yankees (33-32) were merrily rolling along on their longest winning streak in two years.
Reyes tied his career best for steals and leads the big leagues by a long shot with 35 - that's 13 more than the next guy - hit an RBI single on a splitter in the third and homered in the fifth on a hanging curveball. Carlos Gomez also stole a bag on a 2-for-3 night with some spectacular defense.
The Mets had five stolen bases in seven attempts against Jorge Posada.
Making his second start, the Rocket's (1-1, 3.65 ERA) fastball actually reached 92 mph but hung around 89 mph most of the time. The 44-year-old allowed two runs, seven hits and one walk, striking out eight in 6.1 innings. That puts him back in second place on the Career K List with 4,619 - just five more than Randy Johnson, who is now on the DL.
Julio Franco, the oldest player in the majors, went 0-for-3 against the oldest pitcher in the league. They became the wrinkliest batter-pitcher matchup in the bigs since 1933, totalling 93 years and 246 days in age. Carlos Delgado was awarded the Golden Sombrero, having gone 0-for-4 with four strikeouts on a 4-for-28 skid.
