In the absence of Hank Blalock, Ramon Vazquez was called up from the AAA Oklahoma RedHawks and immediately drove in a career-best five runs, including a two-run shot in the second inning. Mark Teixeira and Victor Diaz added three RBI a piece while Kenny Lofton hit a two-run bomb in the ninth.
Brandon McCarthy (4-4, 5.82 ERA) allowed four hits and one run over six good innings, striking out two and walking two to win his career-best third straight decision.
Struggling Houston veteran Woody Williams (1-6, 5.52 ERA) gave up eight hits and five runs, including three homers, over just four innings of work.
Houston rookie Hunter Pence got the club's first hit, a triple with one out in the second, to a standing ovation before scoring the Astros' only run on a Luke Scott groundout. Pence, in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak, also had a double in the fourth.
