It seems like it's been one thing after another for the 11-17 World Champs.
A week after losing Josh Hancock in a car wreck, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter received the news that he would be out for at least another three months after having arthroscopic surgery on his elbow.
Top all that with being shut out by the mediocre Houston Astros (13-16) to remain in very last place in the NL Central and you have a club in desperate need of a figurative ray of sunshine. Maybe a rainbow, too.
Not to take anything away from Matt Albers (1-1, 3.32 ERA), of course. The rookie pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning (on short rest, no less) for his first big league win last night, allowing only 3 hits with 2 K's and a walk.
Fellow rookie Hunter Pence hit a grand slam - the Astros' third this season - for his first career homer to aid Houston in its domination over the Cards.
Carlos Lee busted the game wide open in the fifth with a three-run double off the struggling Kip Wells (1-6, 6.59 ERA) to make it 6-0. Wells pitched only 4.1 innings and surrendered 7 runs on 6 hits with 4 walks and three strikeouts.
Mark Loretta was 4-for-5 with an RBI and Luke Scott had a pair of RBI doubles for the Astros, who scored a season-high in runs and went 8-for-17 with runners in scoring position.
Sad news: Albert Pujols went 0-for-4 to snap a 12-game hitting streak.
