With Tom Gordon on DL, Brett Myers Will Close

Tom Gordon has been sidelined once again with a shoulder injury - for the second straight season.

The Philadelphia Phillies placed the veteran closer in a nursing home on the 15-day disabled list Friday due to inflammation in his right rotator cuff, retroactive to Wednesday. Gordon missed three weeks last August with a strain, as well.

At the tender age of 39, Gordon is 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA and five saves in nine appearances this season. The righty has blown two of his last four save chances however, giving up three runs and five hits in 4.1 innings innings of work.

Brett Myers will finally get another chance to play hero as he takes over the closing duties while Gordon is out. Myers picked up his first career save yesterday in a 9-7 win over the San Francisco Giants.

In a related move, the Phillies purchased the contract of Yoel Hernandez from AAA Ottawa. The 27-year-old right-hander went 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA and three saves in seven appearances with the Lynx.
