Moose Injures His Hammy

New York Yankees starter Mike Mussina left Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins three batters into the third inning after straining his left hamstring on a 2-1 count to Luis Castillo. He then motioned to the dugout for pitching coach Ron Guidry and manager Joe Torre to visit the mound. Trainers escorted the 38-year-old righty to the clubhouse after a short discussion.

Mussina, beginning his 17th big league season, gave up a walk and a double in the first two innings against the Twins, after allowing eight hits and six runs in just four innings against the Baltimore Orioles last week in his first start of the season.

Sean Henn, who came in to relieve Mussina, will likely start in his place Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians, but the club hasn't put Mussina on the DL just yet.

Moose's injury proved to be untimely for the Yanks, who were shooting for a series sweep of the Twins, as Minnesota roughed up their bullpen for 5 runs and the win. Henn gave up one run in the fourth and Kyle Farnsworth allowed 4 consecutive runners to score in the eighth for the loss. Ramon Ortiz pitched eight innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run - an Alex Rodriguez sacrifice fly.

News out of Minnesota: The team called up lefty Glen Perkins to help out the relief corps and sent third catcher Chris Heintz down to AAA Rochester.

Cool shades, Farnsworth, it can get pretty bright in the Metrodome.

The sun never goes down when you're as cool as Farny.

Hey Sooze....I told you the Twins were going to win last night...

I had them and the Pirates...fuckin Pirates cost me...

Then to add insult to injury, I went and played the Pittsburgh Penguins in hockey....and the bastards lost 6-3...

Well Stiles, sounds to me like you should stop betting on teams from Pittsburgh!

Last night's game was awesome. I'm sorry about Moose's hammy, but we had a chance to get at their bullpen early, and that's always nice no matter how it happens.

Megs, Mike Mussina is 38 years old. He knew the risks pitching at that age!

First of all I can't belive they didn't call up Mike Venafro before the season started posting a 0.00 ERA and now they call up Glen Perkins instead of him. If I were Venafro I would hope they release me so I could go to another team that doesn't screw him around. Granted he did have a bad first appearance on the farm. Its also worth stating that he pitched in 30 degree temperatures and they used him as a long reliever which he is not in that game. Additionally he had not pitched in 2 weeks. For them now not to call up Venafro is a slap in the face.

You bring up an interesting point, Anonymous. Lots of pitchers have bad outings, but I think it being April, everyone gets another shot. Hopefully Venafro will get the call sometime this season, since I would like to see him up in the big leagues, as well. For now, we get to see what Perkins has done with his offseason.
