Wouldn't you know, our 600th post is about something scandalous.
Minnesota Twins minor league pitcher Anthony Swarzak was suspended Friday for 50 games after testing positive for a drug of abuse banned by baseball's testing program.
The 21-year-old righty was 0-2 with an 11.12 ERA in one start and one relief appearance over 5.2 innings this season for Class-AA New Britain.
He is the fourth minor leaguer suspended under the drug program this year, with 37 suspensions under the program last year - 32 for performance-enhancing drugs and five for drugs of abuse.
Something that completely boggles my mind is why on earth would these players risk their season and reputations by taking banned substances? Is it really worth it?
Testing for drugs of abuse is not administered randomly, but on a basis of reasonable cause. The list of banned substances for drugs of abuse include marijuana, cocaine, LSD, PCP, opiates, MDMA, GHB and Ephedra.

He's been hanging out with Dmitri Young.
Ooooooh nice segue.
I see LSD on that list. Do you think he pulled a Dock Ellis?
Dock Ellis never pitched on acid. That's an urban legend.
Yeah, the whole Dock Ellis thing can't be proved either way, but he seems like an honest man, what with being a teen drug addiction councelor and all...
The general concensess seems to be he smoked pot. I'm pretty sure Knappy knows for sure, but Knappy's not here right now for me to ask. While I understand the reason's NOT to do it...to be 21 years old, have the kind of talent and potential...I can all see where's he probably go a major stress load as well. Maybe he snapped and needed to get away with it and felt he could beat the system? I think if that's the case he found out he made things worse for himself. But...live and learn...
Agreed, Dianna. I don't find pot to be as harmful as the MLB organizaion does, but if it means losing your job, why risk it? Hopefully he's learned his lesson.
