The Tigers' new designated hitter, Gary Sheffield, was hit in the lower back by a pitch in the second, but remained in the game, going 0-for-2 with a walk and an RBI single. Brent Clevlen was also hit - in the head by a Tyler Clippard pitch in the sixth - but he'll be fine.
In his first spring training appearance, closer Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect third inning with two K's for New York.
Hideki Matsui hit a two-run homer during a three-run second off of reigning Rookie of the Year, Justin Verlander, who struck out one using 34 pitches in two innings of work.
A-Rod lined an RBI single in the fourth that extended the lead to 4-2 before Detroit went up 5-4 on Placido Polanco's two-run double in the fifth. Minor-leaguer Bronson Sardinha hit the last-chance, two-run bomb off Felix Heredia as the Yankees improved to 5-0.

the weak sisters combined for a win? omigod, this must only be spring training. there's no way BOTH of them will be healthy come game 1 of the season.

I know, pretty unbelievable. But you're right, there's always something with those two. I have a good feeling about this season though! Hopefully they have all their injuries out of the way. Besides, Big Z says this year's the year.
