Florida Marlins right-hander Josh Johnson has been diagnosed with an irritated ulnar nerve that will most likely keep him out for at least the first two months of the season.
Johnson said his arm first began to hurt while he was throwing on Jan. 19th, with the pain moving up his arm past his elbow. On Monday, team doctors concluded from tests that there is no bone or muscular damage, and the best-case scenario is that he may begin throwing again in a month.
Johnson went 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA as a rookie in 2006, missing the final three weeks of the season with an unrelated strained muscle in his forearm. Among the candidates to take his spot in the rotation are right-handers Yusmeiro Petit, Wes Obermueller, Sergio Mitre and Jose Garcia, and lefty Chris George.
