Brady Clark Traded for Elmer Dessens
The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Brady Clark and cash from the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday for reliever Elmer Dessens. This trade may come in handy in the case of a season-ending injury to outfielder Jason Repko.
Clark, 33, has a .278 career batting average over seven seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets and Milwaukee, showing up in 125 or more games in each of the past four seasons with the Crew. He hit .263 with four longballs and 29 RBIs in 138 games last season - one year after batting .306 with 183 hits.
The 36-year-old Dessens will add some right-handed experience to the club's bullpen. He has a career 46-59 record with a 4.41 ERA over 10 big league seasons with Pittsburgh, Arizona, Kansas City and Los Angeles. In parts of three seasons with the Dodgers, he appeared in 59 games - 6 starts - going 2-3 with a 3.74 ERA over 108.2 innings.
Dessens, expected to pitch long relief, has a 3.75 ERA spanning 12 outings for the Dodgers this spring.
The Dodgers will pay Clark the $1.7 million they were set to pay Dessens, and the Brewers gave them $2.1 million to cover the difference from what Clark would have made in Milwaukee. Clark has played 286 games in center field, 238 in right and 75 in left over his career.
Repko will have surgery Wednesday in Los Angeles and is likely out for the season. An MRI showed he tore two hamstring tendons off his pelvic bone in an injury that occurred while he was chasing a fly ball last Thursday.
