In less than two hours on Tuesday at the winter meetings, the New York Mets made some serious moves. First, they signed free agent relievers Jon Rauch and Frank Francisco to somehow beef up their bullpen and add some much-needed depth to their situation. Then, they shipped center fielder Angel Pagan to the San Francisco Giants for outfielder Andres Torres and right-hander Ramon Ramirez. Busy, busy.
Manager Terry Collins is awfully proud of their work:
"We rebuilt our bullpen in one day."
You certainly did, sir. Let's hope the Mets have some leads to protect in 2012 to get these guys some action. But seriously, it's hard not to improve on a 4.33 ERA, which is what New York's relief corps was touting last season (28th in all of baseball) ahead of only the crappy Twins and Astros.
Ramirez, 30, went 3-3 with a 2.62 ERA last season and managed to hold left-handed hitters to a .240 average. That could come in handy.
Pagan, also 30 and fast as lightning, saw nearly a .30-point dip in his batting average last season when the switch-hitter batted .262 with seven home runs and 56 RBI. On the other hand, the soon-to-be 34-year-old Torres was a little worse, turning in a .221 average with just four homers and 19 RBI in 112 games after straining his left Achilles tendon in early April.
