Boston Red Sox star pitcher Josh Beckett has been suspended for six games and fined by MLB, which came to the conclusion that he intentionally threw a pitch at the head of Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder Bobby Abreu last Sunday.
The right-hander was also reprimanded for "aggressive actions" during the bench-clearing dust-up. Beckett, who was "shocked" by the outcome immediately appealed his suspension, so any penalties will be delayed until after his hearing.
"I think the appeal speaks for everything that we feel. I respect the job they have to do, but I don’t agree," he said.Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher was also fined and suspended (one game), serving his penalty when they head to Seattle to face the Mariners for their Home Opener Tuesday night. Halos manager Mike Scioscia, centerfielder Torii Hunter, and pitcher Justin Speier were fined for their actions, as well.
Too bad no one got knocked out.

No way Beckett threw at his head intentionally. That suspension is bs, and I hope he appeals.
Anon, Beckett's probably won't get reduced, seeing as how most ball players who do appeal either serve their suspensions or drop their appeals by recommendation of their agents.
Someone needs to knock out Josh Beckett. That throw to the head was CLEARLY intentional.
My issue is that he says, "I respect the job they have to do, but ... " By saying "but," it means he does NOT have any respect for the disciplinary process. He lipped off to Scioscia--more disrespect. He even referred to the death of Angels' pitcher Nick Adenhart when he said, "Obviously there's a lot of emotion in this series. Not only facing us, but the tragedy." Yes, the Red Sox have been thorns in the Angels's sides in years past, but bringing up their tragic loss--something the Angels seem to be handling quite admirably, by the way--is unbelievably low and disrespectful. I'm not an Angels fan--they beat my guys in '02 WS--but I have a lot more respect for the way they've handled themselves than I do for hotheads like Josh Beckett.
