Holy crap you guys, it's Opening Night. Reigning champion Philadelphia Phillies starter Brett Myers will toss the first pitch of the 2009 baseball season tonight, kicking off the opener against the Atlanta Braves at 8:05pm ET. Just look at those eyebrows. He obviously means business.
Derek Lowe will take the hill in the bottom of the first, after being lured away from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the tune of $60 million. The right-hander may be out for revenge after losing Game 1 of the NLCS and getting a no-decision in Game 4. He went 14-11 with a 3.24 ERA last year.
The New York Yankees were the last team to win consecutive championships, winning three straight titles from 1998-2000. However, it's been even longer for the National League, as the Cincinnati Reds won back-to-back titles in '75 and '76. Can the Phillies do it this year? They are virtually the same team (minus a Pat Burrell) that plowed through the playoffs last season, going 11-3 against the Milwaukee Brewers, Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Rays...

Totally unrelated to this particular post, but I love the picture on the homer watch. I cracked up :)
It was so good to finally watch some meaningful baseball. Spring Training felt longer than usual this year.
Amen to that.
