Baseball purists just pooped their pants.
Umpires and baseball management signed an agreement on Wednesday that will allow instant replay to determine calls on the field.
Though they haven't figured out when it will begin, instant replay will be limited to boundary calls, including whether fly balls are fair, foul, or over the fence.
Thoughts?

Worst mistake MLB has ever made. End of story.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
F U Bud Selig!
I just pooped my pants, and I'm not even a purist.
I'm torn. On one hand, I love the aspect of umpiring. It's something that few people can actually do, and do well. On the other, it would speed things up greatly.
speed things up and baseball in the same sentence? hmmm, why is this so bad? they take tv time outs dont they? the slow pace and unpredictable length of the game is, to me one what make the game so good. i enjoy watching ozzie get out there and do his thing. funny as hell. fu bud. vegas needs a team. any word on that. you rock sooze, keep up the gnar. -one love- -xray johnny-
wow, I think hell is freezing over as we speak... What's next??? No please, someone tell me... How long before it is used for every play, safe, out, strike, ball... this could get out of control very quickly...
Instant Replay kills the humanist nature to baseball... takes all the fun (and the fight) right out of it...
Do it up. The umps are inconsistant.
Huge mistake. Huge. Given the number of things that could ultimately be subject to review, this is a slippery slope and all that.
Huge mistake. Yuck.
As a baseball purist I think this is a BIG mistake.
It's an unfortunate but true fact that the sports world wants to make baseball more and more like other sports. Baseball is truly unique and adding things like instant replay takes away from some of the special character that true baseball fans love.
Casual baseball fans and those people that only know their baseball from Sportscenter highlights are the people that want instant replay. They're also the type of fans that prompted MLB to look the other way while players did steriods... just something to think about.
Instant Replay ought to be used for almost every play in baseball. Home runs over the wall, or around the foul pole; traps or catches in the outfield; close plays at every base, including 'did he really tag him?'; foul tips/hit batsmen (sorry, batspersons). The only thing umps should be allowed to call with impunity are balls-and-strikes, and only because they haven't implanted every ball with little chips and installed sensors under home plate yet.
Don't know about you, but I'd rather get the call right than wrong. (Still waiting for Holliday to touch home plate.)

This is the dumbest idea in the history of the game, and anonymous that said it should be used in every aspect of the game could very well be the dumbest human being in the history of our species.
That said, I'm disappointed in the news that replay has now entered our nations pastime, but not necessarily because of it's initial use. I guess I don't really have a problem with them using it for home run calls, but I'm afraid we've just opened the door that makes baseball into a sport that none of us want to see.
Sure, it's home run calls now, but later it's fair/foul, then it becomes catch/no catch, then they'll add safe or out. Eventually, they'll be using replays for every call on the field, and we'll all be wishing none of this ever happened.
I understand the argument from the supporters. Get the call right. But I don't think they realize what will be taken from the game when this whole thing gets out of hand.
It's a good day for Bud Selig, but a sad day for baseball. Very sad.
Wow, Mike, a bit harsh on "anon" there. I see your point about instant replay most likely stretching to over to safe/out kind of situations but they can always get rid of instant replay if fans end up not liking it.
Personally, I think it'll be OK the way they set it up right now. The difference between a homerun and a ground rule double can significantly change the outcome of a game... those calls are harder for umps to make. Safe vs. out and strike vs. ball are calls that should remain judgment calls by the umps.
Instant replay is just another advancement in baseball. Sure, it takes some purity out of the game but so did steroids.
