Remember When Barry Zito Was Awesome?

Man. I suck at baseball. It's been a while, but there was indeed a time when Barry Zito was awesome at pitching.

The struggling left-hander was demoted to the relief corps Monday by the San Francisco Giants, who have high hopes that their former ace can get his crap together in the bullpen.

The three-time All-Star and 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner with the Oakland Athletics lost every one of his first six starts of this season, seeing his ERA sky-rocket to 7.53 after he was roughed-up for eight earned runs over just three innings of his team's 10-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

It's been almost a year-and-a-half since he signed a record $126 million, seven-year contract with San Francisco... and let this be a lesson to clubs everywhere whose hurlers want extended contracts with a ridiculous amount of zeroes attached to them.

The Giants plans to use Pat Misch against the Philadelphia Phillies in pace of Zito this Saturday, after recalling the lefty from the AAA Fresno Grizzlies when starter Kevin Correia was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

He actually did figure in the decision in his last outing, since he gave up eight runs in three innings and his team lost 10-1.

That makes him an even worse 0-6, instead of 0-5 with a no decision

Oh man. You know, I posted this 2 days late, and when I checked his stats they must not have been updated yet, which is where I got the whole no-decision thing... Poor Giants fans.

It's worth wondering what kind of celebrity Zito can tap at this point. Clearly, Alyssa Milano is no longer returning his phone calls. My guess is it's going to be strictly reality show talent until he gets back in the rotation. Even then, though, I can't see him returning to the bigs. Maybe Rue McClanahan, and that's if he's lucky.

I hear Mindy McCready is available.

Yeah, Zito's poor performance since he joined the Giants directly affects me because I traded for him in my keeper fantasy league and have been stuck with him for three years. Finally, this year, I can drop him and watch him fall into oblivion.

I don't know what I rather have: pay a pitcher 15 million a year and never have him pitch a game ( Mike Hampton) or pay a pitcher 15 million a year and watch him perform like Zito. Both scenarios hurt.

Screw you Zito!!!

It's getting harder and harder to remember when Barry Zito was awesome.
