In an attempt the fill the gap at the tail-end of their bullpen, the Baltimore Orioles have given the closer's job to George Sherrill... who is now a clean-shaven tough guy.Sherrill, one of four players acquired from the Seattle Mariners in the mid-February trade for strikeout machine Erik Bedard, has a steady 3.00 Spring ERA, with no walks and six strikeouts in five appearances spanning six innings.
The 30-year-old lefty was given the role after manager Dave Trembley realized that Chris Ray was still recovering from elbow ligament replacement surgery. Sherrill was the setup man in Seattle for closers Eddie Guardado and J.J. Putz, accumulating a career 10-8 record with a 3.65 ERA over 195 games.
